Abstract

This paper presents a state-of-the-art review of nuclear density gauges, addressing them as an established and high-impact application within the broad spectrum of nuclear technologies. Through a systematic literature review, the study details the operational principles of these gauges, which are based on the interaction and attenuation of ionizing radiation with matter, and describes their main configurations: transmission, backscatter, and reactive. The paper explores their crucial applications in strategic sectors such as process industries (mining, petrochemicals) and civil construction, where they are distinguished by their ability to perform precise, non-invasive measurements under adverse conditions. The analysis also addresses the intrinsic duality of the technology: its high precision is counterbalanced by a stringent radiation safety framework and a complex licensing process, regulated in Brazil by the CNEN, in addition to a significant initial investment for acquisition and regulatory compliance. Despite these barriers, it is demonstrated that the global market for these devices is robust and exhibits a continuous growth outlook, driven by industrial demand for optimization and quality control. It is concluded that nuclear density gauges are a high-value-added technology, whose success depends on the balance between technological advancement, economic viability, and an inflexible safety culture.
