Strategic planning is important in all organizations, including the management of an educational institution. In this context, this study seeks to present the application of strategic planning in educational management. An applied theoretical conceptual essay was used as method, with descriptive and bibliographic characteristics and a qualitative approach to the data. Articles that addressed strategic planning in management in education were collected in management journals. Our sample consists of 30 articles that addressed strategic planning in educational management in the title, abstract and keywords. From these, 21 articles were selected since they report empirical studies in educational institutions that elaborate strategic planning in their management or are aiming at implementing it. Among the results, it was found that the main reason that facilitates or inhibits the implementation of strategic planning in the management of educational institutions is how the objectives are transparent or not to the professionals and the manager, that is, a planning built with the participation of all the ones involved in the context will be much easier to achieve the expected goals. Such planning presents an overview of the past to project the future, thinking about the pedagogical, economic-financial aspects and the existing competition in the sector.
