Packing and Cutting Problems: An Application to the Steel Industry;
In problems involving the packing and cutting of irregular items, it is essential to consider their allocation within a raw material (container) larger than the items them selves. Thus, the allocation must ensure that all items are entirely contained within the container without overlapping. This study aims to introduce the concepts of irregular item packing and apply computational methods to solve automated bar cutting and packing problems for steel parts in the industrial sector. Preliminary results are presented using optimization techniques to minimize material waste in bar cutting and to generate no-fit polygons for packing items.
