Abstract

Seed quality is crucial for the development of vigorous plants, and 'Carrizo' citrange is widely used as a rootstock in citrus farming. However, factors such as storage and temperature affect germination; therefore, sustainable treatment alternatives are being explored, including the use of cold plasma. This study evaluated the effects of cold plasma treatment on the germination of 'Carrizo' seeds. A low-pressure radio-frequency dielectric barrier discharge reactor with nitrogen gas was used to treat the seeds for 1, 2, and 3 minutes. An increased wettability was observed for the treated samples. Fourier-transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies revealed chemical modifications on the surface, with an increase in oxygenated compounds. Scanning electron microscopy showed surface erosion. The treatment reduced the germination rate and did not affect shoot or root growth, with a prevalence of polyembryonic seedlings.
