The understanding of the contemporary management of organizations is becoming essential in the quest for understanding the factors that lead organizations to success in the current market, rather complex and increasingly competitive. In this context, it is possible to notice that there are few studies on the practices and tools for management and on adherence of these to the organizations. This study investigates the situation of the largest food and drink industries of Santa Catarina, and aims to determine what criteria lead managers to choose the management tools adopted and if there is adherence to the current management model. To check the selection criteria on the adoption of tools, a study was conducted by multi-event semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis in three of the largest industries in this sector, and subsequently the results were used for cross examination with variables reported by theoretical framework. Among the problems identified it is emphasized that the models of management of these organizations are built in accordance with their immediate needs and not according to a plan. The research revealed that the companies analysed do not follow a single style of management, that is, its management model is being tacitly constructed, through the interaction, often defective, between the tools existing in the organization and the new tools of choice.
